Hello again! In my second post, you learned about the style that Monique Morris uses to captivate her audience. The power of literature is incredibly handy in today’s world and there are so many different pieces that are able to move readers while still proving a specific point. Monique Morris is able to warp her powerful words into a message that sticks up for young Black women all throughout America. While reading further into the text I have developed my own thoughts as to what Monique Morris uses her gift of writing for. Through her writing, Morris makes the claim that young African American women are being criminalized throughout the education system. While this claim may seem unrealistic to some, she uses extensive research and information to back it up. Hello and welcome back to my blog about the novel Pushout written by Dr. Monique Morris! In case you missed it, last blog I introduced the book and what my ideas were surrounding it so far. I briefly went over the long list of Morris’ accomplishments and discussed the ideas of how sheltered we are, here at Hopkinton High School. In this blog, since I have read more, and am beginning to understand the deeper concepts of the novel, I will be analyzing the important choices and strategies used by Dr. Morris.  One of the most critical pieces of literature is the way in which authors capture their readers. This is something that is notably difficult to do when writing a non-fiction novel about a topic that is quite controversial. This is a page where I will be reflecting on my interpretation of the Novel Pushout which seemingly mirrors the effect of the American school system on young Black girls. Written by Monique W. Morris, Pushout grabs the attention of readers by sharing the stories of those who were underestimated in the school system. This novel not only shares heartbreaking stories but also demonstrates the consequences of the segregation mindset that is still present in the education system today. The atrocious actions that happen to young women occur solely based on the color of their skin.  Pushout is only scratching the surface of Morris’ accomplishments.
